BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

There are two new faces that have joined the Beaverton Police Department.

BPD has bought two new K9s and they are currently in their 10 week training with their handlers.

The K9s were purchased for $8,000 each, after the department retired K9s Jago and Alex at the start of the year.

BPD said they had some help with the purchase.

The Spirit of Blue Foundation gave the department a $2,500 grant.

"K9s are cute and they're fun to have around but really they add a huge capability to a police department it allows them to smell and hear things that a human police officer can not do. A canine police officer can protect a police officers life," said Ryan Smith, Executive Director of Spirit of Blue Foundation.

Spirit of Blue gives out grant money for K9 purchases nationwide.

According to the foundation's website, they are dedicated to enhancing officer safety.
