Cowlitz PUD customers upset over high electric bill

Posted: Updated:

Many customers with Cowlitz PUD want answers to why their bills have been skyrocketing over the last couple of months, in some cases a couple hundred dollars more than they are used to.

A spokesperson with Cowlitz PUD says they received many complaints over this past weekend about customer bills. Alice Dietz with Cowlitz PUD says there are two reasons behind it, our recent cold snap and a rate increase.

Sherry Davis is one of those customers who was surprised to see her bill, but she says she’s one of the lucky ones.  Davis’ bill was only seventy buck more last month, she says some people have been getting bills for almost double from what they usually pay.

Over the weekend customers took to Facebook to show their frustration. Cowlitz Public Utility District posted a message saying they recognize customer concerns and that they will look into it.

Alice Dietz spokesperson for the company said they did just that, and they found no issues in its current billing or meter systems.

She said there are a couple of reasons behind the higher bills.

“We had a very mild winter last year, so our rates didn’t increase for our customers and this year we had some very cold days. So that makes a big impact on our customer bills,” says Dietz.

The second reason is a seven and a half percent rate increase that was implemented in September of last year.

Despite Davis and her husband making changes around their house, she’s tired of those changes not making a difference for her.

“It’s the constant rising of our PUD rates for Cowlitz County, it’s ridiculous,” said Davis.

Because some of the customers’ bill being $300, even $500 in some cases, Dietz says they plan on working with those customers who might need help.
