Finding housing in Portland rent crisis a burden for low income residents

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Finding housing during Portland’s current rent crisis is challenging, but even more so on a limited income, and with a criminal conviction on your record.

Ilana Goodwin has been looking for a place for months, filling out rental application after rental application.  She recently thought she’d found a match, and paid more than $100 in application fees, only to find her application had been denied.  As a result, she lost her Section 8 voucher.

“I’m frustrated because I had a limited time to look for housing and this was my last-ditch effort,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin works a seasonal job, and hopes to eventually find a home of her own, but now she has lost the assistance she had with Section 8, and has been told re-applying for and getting housing aid could take years.

“It’s always the people at the bottom who get squeezed the most,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin said the management at the apartment complex that denied her application agreed to refund her application fee, but Goodwin said she is still waiting.

In the meantime, she is back to square one, looking for a place to live.
