New parking meters installed in NW Portland

Posted: Updated:

The days of free parking in northwest Portland are over.

Residents that ever tried to find parking in northwest Portland know it can sometimes be a real challenge. The city hopes installing parking meters will make it easier to find a parking spot.

Portland Bureau of Transportation crews started installing parking meters in the area Tuesday morning, the next step in a parking plan first approved back in 2013.

The PBOT crews will install meters along and adjacent to Northwest 21st avenue and Northwest 23rd Avenue running from West Burnside Street to Northwest Vaughn Street.

There will be a total of 360 metered parking spots installed, with a mix of two-hour and four-hour spots available.

Drivers will only need to feed the meters from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Shops, restaurants and bars line these streets, and there is a lot of housing in the neighborhood – all with limited street parking.

According to PBOT officials, the hope is the parking meters will lead to more turnover.

"For quite some time, parking difficulties have negatively impacted livability and business vitality in this vibrant neighborhood," PBOT director Leah Treat said in a release last month. "With the installation of the new meters, we are taking a systematic approach that will allow us to meet the parking needs of residents, businesses and visitors alike. It's a major step forward, and we believe this approach is a powerful tool we can potentially use to help alleviate the parking challenges in other high demand areas of Portland."

Some area residents were skeptical of the plan, saying the meters could discourage people from visiting the businesses in the area.
