Students, health experts urge OR lawmakers to raise legal smoking age to 21

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon lawmakers are considering a controversial idea, moving the legal smoking age to 21.

With the legislative session in progress, students and health experts kicked off a campaign on Tuesday to urge Oregon lawmakers to raise the age for tobacco sales from 18.

The American Cancer Society backs the proposal saying that 3-in-4 adults and 7-in-10 smokers support raising the age to 21.

A house committee in Washington State has voted in favor of raising the smoking age there.

Last year, Hawaii became the first state to officially raise the age.
