A man bleeding from a stab wound to his abdomen approached police officers in the Sherwood Kohl's parking lot and said his girlfriend stabbed him as he was driving her home.

Jose Garcia, 31, of Sherwood, told officers at 10:40 p.m. Monday that his girlfriend got out of the car after stabbing him and was walking in the area.

The officers provided first aid to Garcia and called for medical help.

As officers and a K-9 team began to look for the suspect, a woman approached them. Police said the woman was identified as the suspect, Stephanie Avalos, 27, of Sherwood. Officers said she was no longer armed with a knife.

Avalos was arrested for a probation violation and taken to the Sherwood Police Department to be interviewed.

Avalos was subsequently booked in the Washington County Jail on the additional charge of second-degree assault. Police said more charges may be added as the investigation continues.

Garcia was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who might have additional information is asked to call Sherwood police via the non-emergency dispatch line at 503-629-0111.
