PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Marijuana has turned into serious business in Oregon and Washington, and Wednesday, thousands came to the Portland Expo Center to learn more about it.

It’s called the Cannabis Collaborative Conference and it runs through Thursday.

Organizers tell us that this conference is by and for the marijuana industry. It deals with things like technology and how marijuana will be packaged, amongst many other things.

“The people are great. I mean, look around. It’s a very diverse group,” attendee Suzanne Gary said.

It is a big room, full of business people, all trying to network, learn and get in on the next big thing.

“Everyone wants to be in the marijuana industry. It’s like the tech industry when it was booming. I mean, this could potentially be bigger,” exhibitor Brandon Gallagher said.

This is the second year for the conference.

“I was here last year and it’s probably about double the turnout,” Gallagher said.

Retired blazer Cliff Robinson will be the keynote speaker Thursday. Robinson is focusing on cannabis treatments for athletes. He says, for new businesses like his, things have to be done right.

“If we don’t roll it out the right way, then it will have the negative perception for some,” Robinson said.

Robinson’s calling his business Uncle Spliffy, playing off his nickname Uncle Cliffy.

“It’s funny, but it stuck, just like Uncle Cliffy stuck, Uncle Spliffy is doing the same thing,” he said.

Robinson’s business will be online only to start. For him, this conference is about meeting people and getting started with his company on the right foot.

“We really have to look at it as a team. You know, I’ve always been a part of a team and this might be one of the most important teams I’ve been a part of,” he said.

The convention continues Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
