VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Vancouver police arrested an 18-year-old man Wednesday night after he allegedly tried to break into one home, and then forced his way into an elderly man’s home and locked himself inside.

Police said they received a call about a suspicious person at the 11000 block of Southeast Evergreen Highway around 5:30 p.m.

Officials said Irving Diaz Rodriguez of Vancouver had attempted to break into a home while owners were inside, but then left the area.

Officers said they then received a second call about a man, matching Diaz Rodriguez’s description, who had broken into a home on Southeast Burlington Drive.

Diaz Rodriguez had allegedly come to the front door, punched the 72-year-old homeowner in the throat when he answered, pulled him outside and locked himself inside the house, according to police reports.

The home owner said his wife and granddaughter had been inside the house at the time of the incident. They reportedly ran into a bedroom and hid inside a closet while Diaz Rodriguez tried to barricade the front door.

Police said they were able to break the door down and arrest Diaz Rodriguez shortly after.

No one was hurt inside the house and the suspect was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Police said Diaz Rodriguez insisted that the homes were his, but they are unsure what caused him to think so.
