LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland woman has been charged with murdering her estranged husband at his Lake Oswego home.

Police were initially called to reports of a suicide at a home in the 13000 block of SW Boones Ferry Road at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.  When investigators arrived they found the body of Joshua Westbrook, 36, but quickly determined his death was not a suicide.

During the course of the investigation, police arrested his estranged wife, Nancy Westbrook, for the crime.  She was initially charged with manslaughter, but the charge was later changed to murder.

Court records show Nancy Westbrook admitted to police she shot Joshua with a shotgun during a conversation about their relationship, which she described as abusive.

She made her first appearance in Clackamas County Court Friday afternoon, via video link from the jail.  She's being held without bail.

"I'm at a loss for words," Joshua's friend Michael Ullman said.  "As you can see, I'm having a hard time right now."

Ullman worked with Joshua at an Amazon distribution center.  Ullman said Joshua and Nancy were separated, and Joshua had moved into the home in Lake Oswego with other coworkers a few weeks ago.

Ullman said he didn't know of any trouble between the two.

"As far as I know, they were talking and not really having any issues," said Ullman.  "He's a guy that would bend over backwards for you.  A really, really good guy."

Sean Frenette lived next door to the Westbrook's for five years in NE Portland. He said Joshua and Nancy were always kind and generous, but he knew they had issues.

"There was fighting, but I never saw it get violent. But there was definitely fighting," said Frenette.  "Josh helped me with the fence when the fence needed fixing, and they'd help us clean when we were renting the house out and take care of my dog...I never thought it would come to this."

Nancy Westbrook is now being held in the Clackamas County Jail without bail.  Her next court date is scheduled for Feb. 12.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the Lake Oswego Police Department, and anyone with additional information is asked to contact detectives at 503-635-0238.
