A press conference was held Saturday regarding the officer involved shooting in Seaside on Friday.

During the press conference, the Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis confirmed that the officer killed in the shooting was Jason Goodding, 39.

According to the District Attorney, this was the first officer involved shooting in Clatsop County in approximately 30 years.

The District Attorney also confirmed that the suspect, Phillip Ferry, 55, was killed as well.

On Friday just before 9:30 p.m., Ferry was walking down Broadway, and was known by the officers to have a warrant for his arrest.

Sergeant Goodding and another officer attempted to place Ferry under arrest for the felony assault warrant.

According to police, Ferry resisted arrest and the other officer deployed a taser.

Police said Ferry then fired a shot and hit Sergeant Goodding, and the other officer returned fire, hitting Ferry.

Both Goodding and Ferry went to separate hospitals, where they later died.

Goodding was survived by his wife and school aged children, and graduated from Sherwood High School.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Portland State University.

Goodding started working for the Seaside Police Department in 2003. During his time with the department, he worked as a patrol officer, detective, and a patrol sergeant.

“Jason was a good man, and an extraordinarily good police officer. He was my neighbor,” said Sheriff Tom Bergin.

Donations to the Goodding family could be made through the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation
