GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A murder suspect told detectives that a deadly shooting and high-speed chase followed an attempted robbery that "did not go as planned," according to court documents.

Police responded to a parking lot at Southeast 174th Avenue and Stark Street in Gresham at 2:33 p.m. Friday.

Officers arrived and found Ravell Deshawn Sterling, 22, dead at the scene. The suspects were gone when police arrived.

According to court documents, Sterling suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

A probable cause affidavit states officers found a 9mm casing, two Winchester .45 caliber casings and one Hornady .45 caliber casing on the ground.

About 15 minutes after the shooting, a Portland Police Bureau sergeant notified dispatchers that he located a gold-colored Cadillac Deville with Washington plates heading north on I-205 that matched the description of a car at the shooting scene.

Court documents state three people were in the car and the driver failed to stop when the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens.

A chase continued on I-205 into Washington and then onto I-5 reaching speeds of 110 mph, according to a probable cause affidavit.

It finally came to an end when Cowlitz County deputies deployed spike strips near Kelso and a Washington State Patrol trooper used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle.

Three suspects were taken into custody without further incident. Rony Celis, 32, of Renton Washington, Charles Moimoi, 20, of Seatac, Washington, and Clayton Harrell, 18, of Des Moines, Washington, were booked in the Cowlitz County Jail on charges related to the homicide.

Court documents state police found a Springfield semi-automatic pistol on the front passenger seat and a Glock semi-automatic pistol between the passenger seat and the center console.

Both guns were in "direct and immediate control of Moimoi," the front passenger, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states Moimoi told detectives he had intended to rob Sterling in Gresham, but it did not go as planned.

According to court documents, Moimoi said Sterling entered the Cadillac and realized a robbery was going to occur so he tried to leave. At that point, court document state there was an altercation between Sterling and another man in the car, and Moimoi shot Sterling with a .45 caliber Springfield XD pistol.

A witness told investigators he heard six gunshots and saw one person fall to the ground while another man continued shooting him, according to court documents.

Gresham police said Monday they are continuing to investigate the possible connection between the suspects and Sterling.

Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call the Gresham Police tip line at 503-618-2719.

All three suspects made their first court appearances Monday in Cowlitz County and they are scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 23. They each face murder charges in Oregon, according to court documents.
