Nearly a quarter of students at a north Portland school are absent due to some sort of stomach illness, according to Portland Public Schools.

PPS spokeswoman Rosie Fiallo said that on Monday, 117 of the 490 students were out sick at Astor School. That is nearly 24 percent of the school’s population.

Fiallo said the kids either have flu-like symptoms or upper respiratory problems.

She added that seven teachers have been hit with the illness as well.

School absences began on Feb. 4 with about 70 kids out of school that day, according to Fiallo.

Fiallo said the custodians did an extra cleaning of the schools on Friday and Monday.

The Multnomah County Health Department is investigating.

PPS said no health notice has gone out to parents yet. Administrators are waiting for more information from the health department.
