PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A car prowler who attempted to run away from officers in a Peal District parking garage was caught and arrested early Tuesday morning, according to police.

Portland officers responded to the REI parking garage at 1405 N.W. Johnson St. at 4:06 a.m. on a report of two people – one wearing a black mask and the other tying a bandana over his face – walking into the garage.

Officers arrived and established containment around the building before beginning to search for the suspects.

One suspect was spotted on the fourth floor. Police said he ran from officers, jumped a retaining wall to drop to the third floor and narrowly missed a patrol car driving through the garage.

The suspect then forced his way through an exterior mesh window covering, according to police, and climbed out onto a glass awning above the sidewalk.

Officers outside the garage convinced the man to climb down. James Patrick Brown, 30, was taken into custody and booked in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, attempted possession of methamphetamine and parole violation.

Officers and a K-9 team continued to search the garage, but did not locate a second suspect.

Police said they did find several cars that had been prowled.
