PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Thousands of fake tax returns are being filed in Oregon claiming millions in refunds.

The Oregon Department of Revenue said there has been a significant increase in recent years in the filing of fraudulent tax returns, often using stolen identities and fictitious W-2 forms.

In Oregon in 2014, there were 4,700 fake returns attempting to claim nearly $8 million in refunds. The Oregon Department of Revenue said all but 159 of those refunds were stopped.

Through mid-November 2015, the state had received nearly 4,000 fake returns, claiming more than $7 million in refunds.

The Department of Revenue encourages taxpayers to file electronically as early as possible. That way, if the legitimate return is filed first, it's easier to stop thieves from using the same information.

The department has also created reporting options through its website and identity theft phone line at 503-947-2000.

If investigators believe someone is using a stolen ID to file a return, they will send a letter to verify a person's identity.
