Surveillance video records failed attempt to steal knives

Posted: Updated:

A local business owner is no stranger to being a target for break-ins, but Monday’s attempted theft was different.

Jeff McArthur, who co-owns the Charles H. Day Tool Company in Southeast Portland, said the shop was first broken into in December 2014. Since then, he’s had a couple other break-ins, but the incidents have always been during non-business hours.

“It’s very frustrating,” McArthur explained, saying he spent thousands of dollars to repair the building and added security measures to make up the loss.

McArthur shared the most recent surveillance video, which showed a man wearing a black cap, jeans and black jacket wandering the store. The suspect spoke to a worker before he unsuccessfully tried to grab a case of Benchmade knives.

McArthur was surprised to see the suspect attempted to steal while the store was open.

"It blew me away,” McArthur said. “They’re willing to go to any extent to get to these knives.”

If you have any information or recognize the man in the video, call Portland Police Bureau.
