SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

After nine years on the force and more than 150 captures, the Marion County Sheriff's Office was forced to say goodbye to K-9 Yo.

Yo, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, was diagnosed with an untreatable form of cancer during a recent medical procedure and had to be put down.

Friends, family and co-workers from all over Marion County gathered Monday to stand alongside Yo's partner, Senior Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger.

Wollenschlaeger and Yo had a special routine after each capture. Wollenschlaeger would go to a drive-through restaurant and pick up a cheeseburger for Yo in recognition of his hard day's work.

The sheriff's office shared examples of Yo's bravery on the job. In one case, Wollenschlaeger was on patrol when a man high on psilocybin mushrooms jumped through the open window of his patrol car and began attacking him.

Yo was released from the back of the patrol car and seized the suspect, which distracted him long enough for Wollenschlaeger to gain control of the situation.

In 2014, Yo successfully tracked and found a female threatening suicide. For his actions in that case, Yo was given the lifesaving award.

"Yo was a regular and crowd favorite at K-9 presentations, school events and a face you always loved to see running around the sheriff's office," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "Yo is gone but he will never be forgotten."
