School district officials are investigating the Lincoln High School varsity basketball coach amid allegations that he made racist comments during a game and humiliated black players.

Patrick Adelman – son of former Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman – is the coach in question.

On January 12th, Lincoln was playing Jefferson High School and at halftime, Lincoln was losing.  In the locker room, a complaint filed with the district claims that Adelman “accused the students of losing because they were mostly white students who were racist and afraid to touch black students”.

The complaint goes on the allege that Adelman singled out two black players from Lincoln and told the white students to touch them saying, “does that make you like black people now?”.

Laurie Wimmer’s 15-year-old son was one of those black players.  She’s one of the parents who filed the complaint.

“He used my child and objectified him in the most egregious way by making student go up and touch him because he’s black,” said Wimmer. “They were all victimized in a different way. The white kids as well as the African American students.”

District leaders won’t comment on the matter, saying it’s an on-going investigation. Wimmer says they did suspend Adelman for a few days, then sent her a letter saying he would be reinstated with extra training and support.

Some Lincoln High students don’t think that’s enough.

“I think the biggest thing should be an apology,” said student Ally Sherman. “To those students that he affected and hurt with his words.”

Former Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman’s children have been in the news for controversial reasons before.

In 2009, Patrick’s brother David Adelman was arrested for drunk driving when he was also coaching Lincoln High basketball. Then, their sister Kathryn resigned as the Jesuit girls basketball coach after her second DUI.

Laurie Wimmer says her son and his teammates deserve real action from school district officials regarding Adelman’s behavior.

“He appears to need anger management support as well as lessons in how to be an ethical education employee with students.”

FOX 12 reached out to Patrick Adelman for a comment, but he has not replied.
