PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A railcar spilled a concentrated form of baking soda on the tracks in northwest and northeast Portland.

The Portland Fire & Rescue Hazmat Team was called out Thursday afternoon to clean up the substance, which is considered a skin and eye irritant.

Northwest Naito Parkway had one lane closed north of the Steel Bridge for the cleanup efforts, while Northwest 9th Avenue also experienced closures.

Pedestrians and pets should avoid coming in contact with the substance. It is white and sand-to-gravel sized.

No information was released about what caused the spill.
