Valentine's Day is right around the corner and a Portland elementary school is celebrating by going green.

5th graders at Rieke Elementary spent Thursday making "kindness posters", and all the materials used were donated by families from supplies they had at home.

Students then wrote compliments about each of their classmates. All of the compliments were then added to a poster and decorated.

FOX 12 spoke with the students, who think the posters are much more personal than store bought Valentine's.

"It's more about the personality rather than just like you're cool and stuff. It's like you're good at math or you're really smart or you're a really good friend, rather than just a random little thing you don't mean," said Thomas.

Rieke Elementary is a certified green school. The school says the kindness posters cut down on paper waste, and time spent decorating Valentine's at home.
