SEASIDE, OR (KPTV) -

Thousands of people were expected in Seaside Friday to attend a memorial service for the police officer who was shot and killed one week earlier.

Some are traveling from as far as New York and Chicago to pay their respects to Sergeant Jason Goodding and his family.

Sgt. Goodding’s procession began in Warrenton at 10:45 a.m. and continued down the coast to Seaside, where he was killed Feb. 5.

“This profession is a brotherhood and a family, and we want to give him and the community the best sendoff we possibly can,” said Detective Sgt. David Peterson with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The community of Seaside throughout the week showed their support for their fallen hero. Flowers and small memorials are scattered throughout the town and a candlelight vigil was held earlier in the week.

Goodding was described by his family and peers as a man who loved his family as well as the work he did for the Seaside Police Department.

Sgt. Goodding was killed Feb. 5 while trying to arrest a man with an outstanding warrant outside the Pig’N Pancake in downtown Seaside.

Goodding is to be awarded the Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice by Governor Kate Brown at Friday’s memorial. The service is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Seaside Convention Center.
