A driver going 140 mph in a 2002 Nissan Maxima slammed into the back of a car on Interstate 5 early Friday morning forcing both vehicles off the roadway, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near La Center at 4 a.m.

Investigators said Nathan Gillespie, 42, of Portland, admitted driving 140 mph before the crash.

His car hit a 2015 Toyota Prius from behind. The driver of the Prius, 48-year-old James Anthony of Portland, was in and out of consciousness at the scene, according to police, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Troopers said Gillespie suffered a possible broken collarbone and broken ankle.

Both cars were totaled.

Washington State Patrol reports Gillespie is facing the charge of vehicular assault.

Police said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
