BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

A sprinkler spared a commercial building in Beaverton from extensive fire damage, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

An alarm company notified dispatchers just after 4:30 a.m. that a commercial fire sprinkler system had activated at 10074 SW Arctic Drive.

Fire crews said the building houses several businesses.

When firefighters arrived, they found the large two-story concrete building filled with light smoke.

According to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue, firefighters spent nearly an hour shutting off utilities, clearing the building of smoke, removing water and salvaging belongings.

A fire investigator determined the fire started under a shelving unit.

Two sprinkler heads activated, which limited damage to only the room where the fire started.

Nobody was in the building at the time of the fire, according to fire officials.

It is not clear what started the fire, and it remains under investigation.
