Valentine's Day has come and gone, and that means one Portland non-profit is getting into gear.

The Bloom Project was busy on Monday taking all of the unused flowers from Valentine's Day and redistributing them, brightening the days of other people.

"For me, and I know our volunteers and certainly a lot of people receiving them, it's just that sometimes it the smallest gesture of beauty that comes there way it makes us all smile. It makes us feel great, we love it. It gets us through the day and brightens their lives," said Jan Striemer.

Volunteers gather flower donations from wholesale floral companies, growers and local grocery stores, then they make new bouquets to deliver to hospice facilities, senior care homes, and hospitals.

Bloom Project volunteer Jan Striemer says a lot of times the flowers go to people who don't get many visitors nowadays.

"It's really heartfelt because these are folks that don't get regular visits all the time and to see somebody is really thinking of them, caring about them, they are just amazed," said Striemer.

Striemer says normally they deliver about 1,000 bouquets a week, but the day after Valentine's day is their biggest day of the year.

They expected to deliver a total of 10,000 bouquets this week.

If you would like to get involved with Bloom Project, volunteers will train anyone who wants to be a part of the non-profit.
