The walk home should have taken Gwendolyn Carter a few minutes, but she never made it home.

Instead, Carter’s body was found hours later.

She was strangled to death, and er killer has never been caught.

Portland Police cold case investigators reviewed details of the case with Fox 12 in hopes of generating new leads in the investigation.

Carter was last seen leaving a party at a house on Northeast Roselawn Street around 3:30 a.m. on May 25, 1992.

Her house was on Northeast 9th Avenue,, but her body was found on a path behind two homes on Northeast 14th Place, near shrubbery, later that morning.

“There was a witness who heard yelling from a female in the same area where Gwendolyn's body was found,” said Det. Eric McDaniel.

McDaniel said original investigators learned Carter had moved to Portland to attend trucking school, but dropped out and turned to prostitution.

Carter owed money to people and was known to use drugs, so the investigators had trouble narrowing down a potential suspect, he said.

“There’s so many possible scenarios because of the path she was on,” McDaniel said. “Knowing she was a narcotics user, was she trying to get some narcotics and take ‘em back home and ran across somebody that she had angered? Or did she just happen through that path at the wrong time?”

Detectives believe there are people who have heard about what happened to Carter, and they need those people to point them in the right direction.

“We bend over backwards to not put the person in jeopardy who comes forward with the information,” said McDaniel. “It's right thing to do and it will make you feel better at the end of the day.”
