LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

When you think high-tech you probably don't think school buses, but a brand new fleet in the Lake Oswego School District might have you thinking differently.

The new buses went into service at the start of the school year and they have several high-tech improvements.

One of the features is GPS tracking, which works with a smartphone app called Safe Stop, where parents can track where buses are in real time and get messages if they're going to be late.

Also, 55 of the new 59 buses run on propane, which is cheaper and better for the environment and even quieter than a standard bus. The buses also have control arms that come out six feet in the front, where a driver's blind spot would be to make sure kids aren't there before a driver starts to move.

There's also a button in the back of the bus that drivers have to push, verifying that they're doing a physical check for any kids who may be sleeping and left behind, at the end of each route.

The new buses each have four surveillance cameras, showing not only what's happening on board, but also one facing outward, showing what the driver would see.

Advocates of the cameras say it all adds up to one thing.

"Peace of mind. They know where their kids are at any given time. If somethings happens on the bus and they're concerned about it, they can call and we can look on the cameras. We've done it several times already this year, and tell them exactly what happened on the bus," said Deedee Jenkins with Student Transportation of America.

The Lake Oswego School District just started a new contract with Student Transportation of America this year, and the new buses are part of that contract.
