SUTHERLIN, OR (KPTV/AP) -

Crews in Douglas County are working to clear a massive rockfall that has closed a road west of Sutherlin.

The Register-Guard reports that rocks as large as 40 feet by 40 feet crashed down onto Tyee Road on Tuesday. Contractors have been working to blast the mammoth boulders apart into more manageable sizes.

Aggregate Resource Industries, Inc. of Springfield said it was hired to help clear the debris out of the way and posted a video of the blasting on Facebook.

Douglas County Public Works Director Robb Paul says the contractor expects to finish the clearing by Saturday, with the road reopening Sunday at the earliest. He estimates the cleanup will cost the county about $50,000.
