PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Rescue crews responded to a car that drove off Northeast Marine Drive and plunged into the Columbia River on Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle was found 25 feet down in the water. Tow trucks were called out to attempt to pull the vehicle out of the water.

Strong currents moved the buoy marker attached to the car and crews were forced to try and locate it again.

Crews located the car the second time, a blue 2002 Honda Civic, and pulled it from the river.

Crews are now treating the incident as a recovery effort, though a body has yet to be found at the scene. Divers said they were able to see a body in the car before it was pulled up. However, they said as the car was being pulled from the river, the body escaped from the car through an undetected open window.

Crews have called off recovery efforts Thursday evening. They will resume Friday morning.

According to a Portland Fire & Rescue spokesperson, someone dove in after the crash in a rescue attempt but was not able to access the vehicle.

The dive team from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office also responded, and the Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team led the investigation of the crash site.

Northeast Marine Drive between 158th Avenue and 185th Drive was closed to all traffic until 10 p.m.
