PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Zoo's California condors have laid the first eggs of the 2016 breeding season, and zoo keepers hope to see more over the next couple of months.

The first four eggs arrived at the zoo’s Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation over the past month.

"Each new egg is critical to the California condor’s comeback," said Kelli Walker, the zoo’s lead condor keeper. She expects three or four more eggs will be laid this year, with the first chick of the year coming in late March or early April.

California condors are classified as critically endangered and are one of the original animals included in the 1973 Endangered Species Act.
