PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who robbed an adult video store in southeast Portland tried to run away from officers and was caught hiding on the roof of a home, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at Fantasyland Video on Southeast 52nd and Foster Road at 3 a.m. Friday.

An officer spotted a 2005 Honda Rav4 leaving the area and remembered a description of the same vehicle at the scene of other recently reported robberies.

Police ran the plates and learned the SUV was stolen in southeast Portland on Feb. 9.

The woman driving the car slowed down, police said, and the man in the passenger seat jumped out and ran away near Southeast 72nd and Woodstock Boulevard.

The driver got out with her hands up and was taken into custody.

Numerous officers, including the Canine Unit and Air Support Unit, responded to the area to search for the suspect who ran away.

The suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Michael Kenneth Swaggart, was found on the roof of a home near Southeast 73rd and Martins Street.

Police said Swaggart complied with commands to come down from the roof. He was taken into custody without further incident.

A woman was inside the house at the time and said an officer came to the door and told her what was going on.

"I grabbed my jacket and my slippers and she said, 'no, we have released the dogs,' and that I should stay in the house and go into the bedroom," the woman told FOX 12.

She said the officer stayed in the house with her.

Another woman who lives in the area said the suspect ran through her backyard.

"As soon as the guy jumped in our backyard, I knew something was going on because it's just so quiet around here," she said.

A K-9 searching the area for evidence located a handgun and cash in the backyard of a home in the neighborhood.

Swaggart was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on the charge of first-degree robbery.

Detectives are continuing to investigate additional robberies in the Portland area and Swaggart may face additional charges.

There have been a number of burglaries and robberies in the metro area over the last week.

Anyone with information about Swaggart and his possible connection to armed robberies should contact Detective Ken Reynolds at 503-823-0407, kenneth.reynolds@portlandoregon.gov.

The woman driving the car was released from custody after meeting with detectives.
