Search to resume for missing driver in Columbia River

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Divers are expected to resume their search Friday morning for the body of the driver whose car crashed into the Columbia River Thursday afternoon.

Rescue crews responded to reports of a car crashing into the river near northeast Marine Drive around 3:19 p.m.

Divers said they located the car, a blue 2002 Honda Civic, but strong currents and high winds moved the buoy they had attached to it and they were forced to locate the car again.

A tow truck pulled the car from the river around 6 p.m.

Officials are treating the incident as a recovery effort. Divers said they were able to see the body of the driver inside the car. However, when the car was being pulled from the water, the body drifted out of an open window.

Portland Fire & Rescue said one bystander dove into the river after the crash in a rescue attempt, but could not reach the car.

Officials are investigating what caused the drive to veer off the road.

There is no word yet on the identity of the driver.
