SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The Senate passed SB 1513 with unanimous support Friday, according to officials.

SB 1513 will allow counties to exempt property taxes for homes owned by surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty.

"Every day our fire fighters and police officers go to work, and they don't know if they will come home," explained Senator Fred Girod (R-Stayton). "These men and women put their lives on the line to protect their communities. This bill is a chance for us to show them our respect. If we can help their families in their time of need, we should."

The bill will now go to the House for consideration.
