PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

On December 2012, Paul Kemp lost his brother-in-law during a shooting at the Clackamas Town Center.

Steve Forsyth, of West Linn and Cindy Yuille of northeast Portland were killed. A third shooting victim, Kristina Shevchenko survived.

Kemp is a gun owner and since the shooting has made it his mission to lower gun related deaths.

Friday former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffordss and Oregon state leaders announced a new group to reduce gun violence.

The mission of the Oregon State Coalition for Common Sense is to work with state leaders to keep guns out of the “wrong hands and prevent gun tragedies.”

Kemp is part of the coalition. He believes many people, him included. were not fully aware of all of existing gun laws, and he credits education to helping him find understanding.

“I think a lot of people have misconceptions of gun laws,” Kemp said. “It’s a complicated patchwork of laws.”

Working alongside people like Gifford, he plans to educate the public of the group's efforts and hopes to find ways to make Oregon families safer from gun violence.

The group noted there are three goals they are focusing on first:

  • Protect kids from accidental shootings by making sure gun owners are required to safely store their guns in a secure area.
  • Prevent people who have a mental health crisis from temporarily accessing guns by providing clear processes for families and law enforcement
  • Strengthen our existing gun background check system
