Police are investigating the death of a newborn in southeast Portland.
Portland police responded to the apartment of David Hernandez on the 13800 block of Southeast Stark Street around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Hernandez said he had a friend staying with him who was eight months pregnant.
He said Sunday morning he found blood all over his bathroom and immediately called 911.
“I go to the bathroom after she does, and I noticed large amounts of blood all over the place,” said Hernandez.
While he was cleaning up, Hernandez said he found the dead newborn child wrapped inside a towel.
On Monday, police said an autopsy determined the baby was a stillbirth.
Hernandez asked his friend if anything had gone wrong and if she had had a miscarriage, but she insisted she was fine.
“At first she was denying on wanting to go, so I think she was trying to hide something,” Hernandez said.
The 21-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and remained there Monday. Police said she is receiving medical and mental health treatment.
Based on preliminary investigation, detectives from the Homicide and the Child Abuse Team were assigned to the case. Police said they will continue to investigate the circumstances of this incident and will present their completed investigation to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
