LINN COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Two people are dead and one person is injured after a car ran off the road and struck a tree in Linn County Sunday afternoon.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office said 76-year-old Virginia Birky was driving along Spicer Road with two passengers from Albany to her home in Sweet Home around 4:30 p.m.

Officials said Birky failed to turn right near Tallman Road and ran off of the road into a ditch, hitting a tree.

Both Birky and her front seat passenger, 68-year-old Richard Helvey, were pronounced dead at the scene according to Linn County officials.

Deputies said the roof of the car was peeled back and it appears Birky and Helvey were both stuck and killed by the tree.

Helvey’s wife, 58-year-old Leona Helvey, was in the back seat and was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

Deputies said all passengers were wearing seatbelts and airbags were deployed. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident.
