PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Bronze Star, the military’s fourth-highest individual medal, was awarded to a member of the Oregon Air National Guard's 125th Special Tactics Squadron in a ceremony Monday.

Senior Airman Randy Theisen was presented the honor for combat duty he saw in Afghanistan in 2014.

The Bronze Star, established in 1944, is award for acts of heroism, acts of merit, or meritorious service in a combat zone.

According to the Oregon Air National Guard, Theisen was the primary joint terminal attack controller for a combined United States Special Forces and Afghanistan commando team.

Theisen is credited with directing air assets to defend crews pinned down by IEDs and enemy fire, allowing them to regroup and get back to their protected compound.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey M. Silver, Oregon National Guard Air Component Commander, presided over the ceremony Monday at the Portland Air National Guard Base.
