SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon State Police trooper was thrown out of his parked patrol car onto the shoulder of Interstate 5 after being hit by another car near Salem.

Emergency crews responded to the D Street overpass on the highway at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said Trenton Simon, 25, of Scio, was driving a Volkswagen Jetta south when he took his eyes off the roadway and then swerved onto the left shoulder to avoid traffic that had slowed down ahead of him.

Investigators said Simon's car struck an OSP vehicle that was parked for speed enforcement. Trooper Jason Davis was leaning out the driver's side door and the crash threw him out of the car.

The Volkswagen rolled over and came to a stop in one of the southbound lanes.

Deputies said Davis and Simon were not seriously injured, however both were taken to Salem Hospital to be evaluated.

Simon was given a ticket for careless driving.
