WILSONVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A Wilsonville company says their life-saving device will soon be available to medical professionals across the country.

The new device injects dozens of tiny sponges into a gunshot wound. Instead of being used in combat zones, it will be available in local hospitals.

The device is called XStat and it's made by RevMedx in Wilsonville.

XStat is a syringe full of hundreds of small sponges, about the size of a breath mint, that expand upon contact with blood.

For the last couple years, military medics have been using the device in war zones to help stop bleeding in gunshot and other traumatic wounds.

Two months ago, the company got FDA approval to sell XStat to civilians for use by hospitals or maybe paramedics.

RevMedx President Andrew Barofsky says it could definitely save lives in places with limited resources.

"In small communities like Roseburg and some of the more rural communities throughout the state, this is a device where when patients come in to that emergency room, the physician has a new tool that allows them to stabilize the patient, save their life, until they can get evacuated to a higher level of care."

RevMedx is working to make XStat available to the public within the next few months.
