PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

People who live in a neighborhood in southeast Portland found to have high levels of toxic pollution are heading to Salem to make their voices heard.

A rally will be held outside a government hearing, all while the state's congressional delegation is asking federal agencies for help.

A letter written by U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer was sent to the Centers for Disease Control and an agency that deals with toxic substances and disease, asking for resources to try to get a handle on the problem, because almost 3 weeks after the DEQ announced high levels of arsenic and cadmium in the air, no one has come forward with a solution.

At the center of all of this is the Bullseye Glass Company, which is near SE 21st and Powell. The DEQ says the company is the likely source of cadmium and arsenic found in the air around the factory, at levels several times what the agency considers safe,

Governor Brown has ordered the DEQ to continue monitoring air quality around the plant, and take soil samples in the neighborhood. For weeks now, people who live in the toxics "hot spot" have been wondering about the impact on their health, and what happens next.

"I've been gardening in the neighborhood for 20 years, and I'm worried about the soil and the health of my children who have lived their whole lives in this neighborhood," said Michael DeVito, who lives near Bullseye Glass.

The legislative hearing begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. in Salem.

Concerned neighbors are planning to rally on the west steps of the Capitol.
