Police: Newborn found in SE Portland apartment was stillborn

Posted: Updated:

After further investigation, the Portland Police Bureau has uncovered that the newborn baby found dead in an apartment in southeast Portland Sunday was stillborn.

PPB said the Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy Sunday afternoon and determined that the baby was a stillbirth.

Police responded to an apartment on the 13800 block of Southeast Stark Street around 11:30 a.m. Sunday after resident David Hernandez found blood all over his bathroom floor and the baby dead and wrapped in a towel.

Hernandez said a friend who was eight months pregnant had been staying with him.

The 21-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and remained there Monday. Police said she is receiving medical and mental health treatment.

Police said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and will present their investigation to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office upon completion.
