If you can't bear to leave your dog or cat at home while you travel, you'll soon be able to take them with you on Amtrak Cascades trains.

Starting March 7, Amtrak will allow a limited number of small cats and dogs in carriers for a $25 fee.

Currently, only service animals are allowed on trains.

Pets must meet certain requirements for traveling on the train, including:

  • Maximum allowed weight, including carrier, is 20 pounds
  • Maximum carrier size is 19 inches long, 14 inches wide and 10.5 inches high
  • Limit 1 pet per passenger
  • Pets must remain in the carrier at all times
  • Carrier must remain on the floor in front of the seat next to the owner
  • Five pet spots are available on each train, and they are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Pets cannot be booked on trips to Canada or trips longer than 7 hours

In order to reserve a spot for a pet, travelers must make a reservation by phone or at a staffed station.
