A local business man is getting very creative with how he would like to see his property used, he wants to give it away for free, but there is a catch.

Once you drive through Sandy you’ll see a giant sign that reads, “Free Land for Brewpub.” The owner says it is a great way to boost the economy in Sandy.

Besides taking coffee orders at Pioneer Coffee, Danalee Dow has been answering a lot of questions about the sign. Many asking her if it’s true.

Dow says she’s never seen anyone give away free land before, but she thinks it’s a great idea because she thinks it’ll help the small town of Sandy grow.

The owner of the property Mark Benson, lives in Hawaii. He spoke to FOX 12 over the phone and said he got the idea from other businesses across the country.

“I got the idea from the Midwest, a lot of small towns will put up free land to entice business to move to town and it’s a way of spurring growth," says Benson.

He feels his property that sits along Highway 26 will also help the local economy in Sandy. Benson says with thousands driving by every day, many of them are going to want to stop by after spending a long day on the mountain and he thinks this spot that’s now covered with overgrown grass will be the perfect site.

“The response has been great, you get all kinds of responses,” says Benson.

The sign has been up for the last couple of months and Benson told me he has already received interest from a lot of brewers. He says before he signs off on a new brewpub he wants to see a solid business plan.
