People take a stand with Apple during its battle with the FBI

Posted: Updated:

In December, a mass shooter took many lives in San Bernardino, California. Since then the FBI asked Apple to support the government’s efforts to solve the crime.

Apple claims in a letter to its consumers that it worked with law enforcement and provided data which is in its possession. Now, the FBI wants a court to force Apple to make software that would help the government access an iPhone that belonged to one of the terrorists.

Tim Cook, Chief Executive for Apple wrote:
The FBI may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control.

Thousands of people throughout the world took a stand with Apple Tuesday evening.

“That’s not right,” Davis Hammon of Portland said at a protest. “We live in this country because we have freedom.”

People used the hashtag #DontBreakOurPhones in an effort to stand together on the issue.

"Well, the courts are going to rule, and it will good to have that precedent,” Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates said. “I do think people want the government to act on their behalf that they feel like the safeguards are there.”

Apple reports it will tell a judge this week that it’s fight with the FBI over iPhone encryption should be kicked in congress, rather than the courts.
