CURRY COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon State Police trooper just returned to his patrol car after helping a disabled truck when his vehicle was struck from behind by an impaired driver.

Trooper Dean Trent had stopped to assist a truck stalled on an uphill grade in the slow lane in a passing area on Highway 101 near mile marker 351, five miles north of Brookings around 12:30 a.m.

Trent had pulled his patrol car behind the truck with hazard lights flashing to alert and divert traffic.

After returning to his vehicle after helping the truck driver, Trent saw another vehicle approaching behind him at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not slow before slamming into the trooper’s car.

Trent was wearing his safety belt at the time of the accident, and received a head injury. Trent was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

The driver of the other vehicle, 24-year-old Jordan Lawwusaw of Kalama, sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital before being arrested.

Lawwusaw is in the Curry County Jail and faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, reckless endangering another person, and assault. Investigators with the Curry County Sheriff's Office cite alcohol and speed as the main contributors to the crash.

This was the second time this week that an OSP trooper was in an accident while on duty. Monday a trooper’s vehicle was hit by another car in Salem during a traffic stop.
