Oregon House OKs hotel tax increase ahead of 2021 World Track Championships

SALEM, OR (AP) -

Lawmakers in the Oregon House have voted in favor of a proposal to double the state's lodging tax in preparation for the 2021 world track and field championships in Eugene.

The Register-Guard reports that the tax increase narrowly passed the House Tuesday with bipartisan support.

The proposal would double the state lodging tax, bringing it from 1 percent to 2 percent. Portland agencies have raised concern, saying local lodging taxes already total 13.5 percent, the highest in the state.

Eugene-based TrackTown USA will host the World Track and Field Championships in 2021 at Hayward Field. Because event expenses will outpace ticket sales and other revenue, TrackTown is seeking government subsidies.

The proposal heads next to the Senate. There is a short timeframe for approval, as lawmakers plan to adjourn next week.
