PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Goodbye Thunder, hello Steel.

Portland's arena football team announced Wednesday that it's going by a new name.

The Portland Steel, as the team will be called going forward, unveiled a new logo featuring a silver and blue suit of armor.

The team said the new name and logo represent "the region's rich competitive nature and proud history."

“The name ‘Steel’ implies the strength needed to withstand the tough, action-packed game of Arena Football,” general manager and head coach Ron James said in a press release Wednesday. “I am excited as the team's coach and GM to be a part of this new chapter for the Portland organization.”

The team had been playing under the Portland Thunder name since it joined the Arena Football League in 2014.

The rebranding takes effect immediately.

The Portland Steel will kick off the season April 1 against the Arizona Rattlers at the Moda Center in Portland.
