VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Seeing the future of our forests could be right at our fingertips. Researchers from Washington State University Vancouver can now grow a cyberforest to predict climate change.

The computer simulation is called LES, after the Russian word for forest. It grows realistic forests, down to each tree's leaves and roots.

Researchers can also customize a model to a particular forest using data from the Department of Agriculture’s Forest Inventory and Analysis Program, other forestry databases and images from drones.

LES can determine how drought, water, wildfires, and other issues will affect forests across the country.
