ALBANY, NY (AP) -

A man whose 29-year-old wife was given six months to live and moved to Oregon to legally end her life is hoping his story persuades New York lawmakers to pass right-to-die legislation.

Brittany Maynard's husband, Dan Diaz, says he believes those who have watched a loved one suffer with terminal illness understand that people should have the option of choosing to die.

Maynard galvanized the effort to allow terminally ill people to end their lives when she moved from California to Oregon in 2014 after she was diagnosed with a lethal brain tumor. She died later that year.

Legislation in New York would require two doctors to certify that a terminal patient is competent to request life-ending drugs.

California has since become the fifth state to allow end-of-life assistance.
