PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A parent took a musical approach to challenge proposed boundary changes at a Portland Public Schools board meeting this week.

The parent, Dr. Kirsten Carr, first described her child’s experience at Hayhurst Elementary and the need to work on enrollment in the school and community to help fight overcrowding.

Her next comment, though, came in the style of the singer Adele. It begins at the 1:01:14 mark in the video.

"Hello, it's me, I've been wondering if after all these weeks we’d get to speak," she sang. "To go over, the boundaries, they say PPS will fix us, but we’ve not seen a fix yet."

Carr, who is the president-elect of the school’s PTA, originally thought her team would not have a chance to comment to the board until April. It was only late Monday morning when they found out they would be able to speak Tuesday.

Carr said that the idea to take the creative approach to delivering the message started as a joke in an email discussion.

While Carr said she decided against some of the suggestions, like wearing a gown to “perform,” and was unsure she could go through with it even walking into the meeting that night, she believed that adding the song “would be a way to set us apart.”

Carr is hoping the district will be able to find a more permanent home for the PPS’s history-focused Odyssey Program, which is currently housed at Hayhurst, but is concerned that her school would not fit district “right sizing” plans if those students were moved.

In an attempt to fill the school if Odyssey moves, Carr said that parents had been recruiting other parents in the area to transfer their students to Hayhurst from other nearby schools facing overcrowding as well.
