PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A suspect sprinting away from police down the main aisle of a Fred Meyer store was foiled by a customer with a shopping cart.

Police attempted to stop Cody Jaye Lindsay, 26, after officers spotted him jaywalking on Southeast 82nd Avenue near Foster Road at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 18. Police said he was nearly hit by several cars.

When officers caught up to him in the Fred Meyer parking lot, they said he took off running into the store.

Surveillance video released Friday shows the suspect rushing past customers, including a small child, with police in pursuit right behind him.

Police said the suspect's attempt to escape was ultimately undone by a shopping cart.

An unidentified shopper rolled his shopping cart into the path of the suspect, sending Lindsay crashing to the floor.

Police then pounced on him, right in front of a freezer case. Lindsay was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, interfering with a peace officer and parole violation.

Officers said the "anonymous shopping cart guy" retrieved his cart, picked up his groceries and continued shopping.

"The officers wanted to thank him for sacrificing his groceries to stop a fleeing suspect," the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.
