PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A former Oregon City man made the sacrifice to donate his kidney to a complete stranger Tuesday.

It started back in October when Chris Shoopman’s girlfriend, Tabitha Kempke read him a post on Facebook. Her former classmate, Richard, who she hasn’t seen in years wrote how he is a dad living in Texas, has kidney disease and might not live to see his children grow up.

“It just stuck with me and kept thinking about it,” Shoopman said.

He added that there was no relationship between the two.

“I’m a dad and have kids,” Shoopman adds, “I understand kids need their dads.”

After thorough research on kidney transplants and testing, Shoopman said he found out he and Richard have the same blood type.

Shoopman even flew out to Texas to get more check ups with Richard.

There, Shoopman discovered they matched on a level a brothers would.

He enjoyed his time in Texas so much that he decided to move near Richard.

“I’m tired of the rain,” Shoopman said “I loaded up the kids and cats and moved [to Texas].”

It’s been a couple days since the kidney transplant and Shoopman said he is getting ready to leave the hospital. He adds Richard is getting adjusted to his new kidney and should be a few days before having a completely normal blood system.

Through the five-month journey, Shoopman said he plans to start a non-profit dedicated to educating and funding kidney donors as well as marry his girlfriend Tabitha in 2016.
